Profile 1/3: Investigator / Experimenter
A 1/3 Profile learns by building a foundation, then stress-testing that foundation through real-life experience. The 1st line seeks to establish a foundation based on what’s reliable and secure. The 3rd line determines what actually works. Put together, this creates a life theme of research, experimentation, adjustment, iteration, and eventual embodied competence.
This isn’t a Profile that is designed to perform perfectly on the first try. It’s built to discover what works and what doesn’t based on investigation and experimentation. This role can then provide a solid foundation for others as well as explanations for what doesn’t work and why.
What is the 1/3 here to do
A 1/3 is here to develop a trustworthy understanding, the kind that comes from both study and lived testing. When you’re aligned, you become someone who can say, “I’ve looked into this, and I’ve tried it, and now I know what holds up.”
If you have the 1/3 Profile, you often have practical wisdom to share because you stayed with a process long enough to learn about it from the inside out.
Why is it often called the “Martyr”?
Original Human Design materials refer to the 3rd line as the Martyr. This is in reference to the experiential, trial-and-error process that the 3rd line tends to go through. In some ways, this role may feel like it goes through some suffering because pursuits often require multiple iterations to find a way that works. This can sometimes be viewed as making mistakes or rarely getting things right the first time. We prefer the term “experimenter” because, in a healthy state, suffering through the discovery process is not necessary. Many 3rd lines learn to enjoy the process more when it is approached with a sense of play or creativity.
How it tends to feel from the inside
The 1st line carries an underlying insecurity, a sense that many ideas, concepts, and theories have not really been proven out. With the first line, you are rarely inclined to take someone else’s word for anything unless you have investigated it for yourself and feel secure in what you have discovered because you know it works. The 3rd line carries an unconscious impulse toward experience and movement, toward figuring things out by gaining experience with them in myriad ways. This unconscious side will tend to unexpectedly find ways to test what the 1st line has been researching to make it more pragmatic. So internally, you might notice a push-pull:
Your conscious mind wants to be sure before you step in, yet life pulls you into experiences that require you to get your hands dirty and discover what happens when you try something out for real. If you allow some room for iterating what you’ve investigated, you will likely find that your body is actually quite resilient and prefers to have some room to play around with things in the process of discovering what you can really trust in your life and about life.
How others often experience you
People often experience 1/3s as:

- Over-researching as a way to avoid contact with uncertainty
- Giving others too many details or trying to teach them when they actually aren’t open to learning from you
Relationships and connection themes
In relationships, the 1/3 often needs:
- time to establish trust and safety
- permission to learn about a person through personal experience, rather than on outer impression orsomeone else’s word
- partners and friends who don’t punish “messiness,” change, or the need for some trial and error in life
- room to have experiences of your own and space to introspect and process alone
- allowance for questioning others’ beliefs and ideals in order to get to the bottom of things for yourself
You may bond through shared practical life, shared projects, or a true process of figuring things out together. There’s usually less interest in idealized romance and more interest in what’s real and workable.

The 1/3 Profile thrives in roles where:

- systems need testing
